Does a piece of string have an end? How long is a piece of string?

I watched another iPlayer documentary entitled just that!
One theory is that the string is infinite, because the closer you look at it the pattern repeats and repeats, so if you were too measure every bump in detail, it'd be neverending

Or something like that which makes more sense...  confused2

eventually all the helium hydrogen hydrogen nitrogen and so forth until no more can stars exist because all matter will have reached a barrier in iron
